The Making of a Cutting Horse

In order for a young horse to achieve show status, one must begin with the proper ground work and training as a 2 year old. This requires determination and patience, allowing the horse to trust and respect the rider while gaining cow sense and skill.

As a starting 2 year old, the daily workouts begin at the 1st level of working an electronic flag. We then progress  to working  a live cow. The foundation of starting two-year olds is as important as training for their show career. We provide what we feel is the proper way to start one.

The next stage, at the end of their 3 year old year, is the beginning of their show career. Depending on the horse, this will begin in either September (small futurities) or November (Fort Worth Futurity). Deciding on which level a horse will compete depends on their skill and ability to handle a cow during their 3 year old year.

Finally, a horse will begin its show career as a 4 year old, competing throughout its 6 year old year at Aged Events nation-wide. Once a horse passes 6 years of age, they are no longer eligible for the Aged Event shows. Weekend shows  have a variety of classes that they may still compete in. Once a horse hits 7  years of age, they are thought of as mature individuals in their show career.
